vectra sri 2.6 project
right guys and gals i purchased this vec with cambelt failure
she has had a really hard life and intend to bring her back to her former glory.
when she arrived on the recovery wagon she looked so sorry for herself
so knowing that it was cambelt failure decided to take off the cambelt cover
to see what had actually caused it.
firstly the cambelt felt tight and didnt seem to be a problem.
then i decided to just time it up to see if it had slipped on the belt....
well i was turning the crank to be told that the cams were'nt moving,
so gave the belt a tug and low and behold it came off in my hand.
it had snapped... oh dear
now the previous owner had said that it had no antifreeze in it and when we had the last big freeze
he went to start it and it sounded as if the cambelt had snapped.
he wasnt wrong, the water pump had totally shot it so with the freeze the poly v belt had held the crank and spun the cambelt which then snapped.
we pushed it into the garage and water pumped it and new cambelt on her just to see if she would start and to see if i was lucky....
well it took ages for her to start with me shouting at her c'mon,c'mon start start...
eventually she cranked up and ran like a bag of spanners missing and banging like fireworks
it was that bad that she blew her plenums off both banks and blue flames were coming from the inlet chambers.
well it didnt dishearten me i was expecting it.
so off came the heads!!!
so here is the progress of her so far....
this is with plenums took off and ready for strip down
rocker covers off ready for cams to come out
the heads are now off and stripped them down
checked if it had done any piston damage
or head damage and thankfully there was none
but this is what we found
12 inlet valves bent....absoutly beautiful
so next day we took the heads to be skimmed and pressure tested, ordered the new inlet valves ordered the new headgaskets (full set) and cleaned up the exhaust valves.
they are all straight thankfully
before the clean up
and after, dont they look differant
the heads are also back and look so fine and dandy....
and with the new a&e inlet valves
already have the new head bolts
thats it for now
the story continues...........
